Today, I spent the day working on the 2016 section of the alumni project. It came with a couple interesting facts. I learned that one of the alumni has the exact same title as he did during his mentorship, a Wellness Director. The organizations were also similar as he swapped YMCAs. It is a pretty cool thing when a mentorship helps you get your next job. I am not sure if that is the kind of job he wants. Even if what you do at a mentorship isn’t your preferred career path, you can still enjoy the work and continue doing it. I also saw a few people that are still in their mentorship or they got a part or full-time job with them. It goes to show that people are enjoying and taking advantage of their mentorship opportunity. These were great stories to find out.

Today was another day of working on the alumni project. I spotted that the most recent students, some starting in 2015, posted their LinkedIn profiles. I think that was a really good idea by the creators of this course to include them. This allowed me to skip the LinkedIn search, which sometimes I’ve been struggling with, since students haven’t updated it to include TU or their mentorship job. But overall, today was a productive day. I feel like I’ll be able to finish it by the weekend after rechecking/editing it.
Today, I worked on more of my alumni project and I finished up all of 2015. So now I only have 2016 and 2017 to do and I’m done. I also talked to Dr. Tiell about some more projects that she would like help on. Among those projects is to provide recommendations and help enhance TU’s M.B.A. Sport Management website. This would help us attract people who take a look at it. I would choose about 10 alumni and ask them questions via email. Maybe someone has a story of how their mentorship got them a job or how their M.B.A. got them a job. Also, Dr. Tiell needs my help in creating some more tests, both on chapters 1-8 and chapters 9-16. These will be fun projects and I can’t wait to get started!
Today, Dr. Tiell asked for my help editing a manuscript that she created. Her primary concern was the use of the references. While reading the manuscript, I checked to make sure the references on the reference page were listed. I highlighted all of these references on the reference page. And I highlighted the references in the manuscript, which were not listed on the manuscript. At the end, I identified references that were both missing in the manuscript and on the references page. I then sent the documents back to Dr. Tiell. She told me that my help helped her fix up first name/last name issues as well.
Today was another day of racking up my hours. I managed to finish all of the alumni of 2014, as well as some of 2015. It was tough to find some of the contact information that is typically found in resumes. A lot of the profiles either didn’t have attached a resume, or the students simply left out the top parts. So I had to use Google to try and find the information like I did for the grads in 2012 and below. I was thinking that the links would provide me with the additional information. But sometimes I got lucky with my Google searches! I also recorded a couple of broken links for Dr. Tiell. She mentioned to me earlier this week that she might have something in store for me with a former VP of the NBA. I am excited about this potential opportunity.
Today was a long day spent on the alumni project. I figured out some problems and I emailed Dr. Tiell about some corrections to the original list. It was helpful to Google search some of the former students. I searched for their connections to Tiffin University or to the place of mentorship, such as "John Doe and Tiffin University" or "John Doe and the Pittsburgh Penguins". I also tried to search for their current place of work, found on LinkedIn, to try to retrieve some contact information. My day also consisted of designing the group page for Tiffin alumni. I created a question but only two people have replied so far. I have 11 people in the group. I plan to go back and email every person I invited to remind them of the invitation to the group. Everyday now, I wish those alumni a happy birthday to stay connected to them. I feel like I accomplished a lot today.
Today, I was able to identify a few problems with the original list of mentorships and alumni. I caught a couple of misspellings of names that I reported back to Dr. Tiell to fix. I also found out that some of the alumni were also married. Day 2 of the new project was just another day of lots of researching. One of the problems that I have to do something about was that the group I set up on LinkedIn only has one person in it so far.
Just a couple days ago, Dr. Tiell introduced me to a brand new project that would require a lot of work. The project was simple at first mention. I only had to retrieve contact information of alumni and current students of the MBA Sport Management program. She also wanted me to make a group page for each person on LinkedIn.
As I started from the bottom of the list on the TUInternships site, I realized that they didn't have a link to their own website. That presented one of the problems as I could not retrieve information such as the type of mentorship job, phone number, hometown, etc. I then tried LinkedIn and it became incredibly hard to find some people. Either they had a common name, didn't list some information, or just didn't have a LinkedIn profile. Most of the contact information I had to leave blank. I did create a group page and I added whoever connected with me. Before I sent a request, I left them a note about who I was and that I am trying to add everyone. Today, I finished up the quiz for chapter 11 after reading, highlighting, and putting it all together. I think it is now my fourth quiz that I have put together. Before my mentorship, Dr. Tiell mentioned that she has already completed half of the required chapter quizzes. I may have a few more to do.
Today, Dr. Tiell told me that I will be working on a new project soon. I'm not sure if it's a completely new project or more of the quizzes. We will have to wait and see. On a side note, classes are going great! I began my mentorship with Dr. Bonnie Tiell on February 14, 2017. Upon being verified over this past weekend, I continued working on my first project. I have completed three chapters now for Dr. Tiell's new book. My duty today was to create a quiz for chapter 12 in the textbook. This included me having to print out the chapter, highlighting important points to include, and then creating the quiz. Sometimes it is hard to find multiple choice questions, but the more quizzes I create, the better I become. Dr. Tiell also gave me some helpful tips last week when I spoke to her over the phone.
Being in this mentorship is so far an exciting, but challenging, experience for me. It is exciting because I get to find out what kind of work Dr. Tiell does. I love to learn about sports and business as well as academics. It is challenging because it also involves time management. I currently am taking two additional courses, one for operations management and one for business strategies in sports. The demands are a lot, however, I know I can do it and it just takes some getting used to. |
